Not long ago, a reboot of one of the best-known and most beloved sagas of the horror genre was made public: Resident Evil. Since 1996, being Capcom's last bet to save them from bankruptcy, until today, with the most recent installment, Village, being one of the games of the year 2021, this franchise has given many adaptations, comics, sleeves, documentation for the Lore of the franchise, movies....
This last part is better known by two different paths:
The Canon part, with 3 movies and a mini series created by computer.
And the Non-Canon part, where there were two paths, the saga of Paul W.S. Anderson, which had a total of 6 movies, each with a different script, setting, and nothing reliable to the video game. And the restart of Johannes Roberts, a change that gave a lot to talk about, but in the end it was approved after a while by the exquisite fans.
It's no secret that the movie itself had flaws, plus this movie was shot shortly after quarantine, things were changing and they couldn't afford to shoot for a long period of time due to the health situation. But not everything is bad, there are very good things, such as the return of the 90s, specifically to the B movies, where it triumphed at the time, and as the film takes place on September 30, 1998, Roberts decided return to the past in this film with several elements that we will name below:
Low budget, some complained about the low budget that the film had, but in the past it was like that, little budget to create a film and depending on the success, there would be a sequel or not, and thanks to the budget they were given, they managed to be successful at the box office , but there was a boom, on streaming and rental platforms, something that no one expected even remotely.
Recreation of the scenarios, imitating something we see in a video game, it is not easy, it has to be an exact replica, with its details and well specified, and the key scenarios of the film were perfectly recreated, the entrance of the Spencer Mansion and the Main Hall of the Raccoon City Police Department. Every detail is recreated with the utmost care, and that can be seen, not only in the settings, but also in the objects, the S.T.A.R.S. weapons, the keys with the symbols of the Remake of the second video game... In short, there are many details that reminded us of the movie and that in a certain part, conquered us.
The soundtrack, if it is true that the soundtrack of the film itself is well composed and well reflected in the film, but also the use of songs from the time has also been a success, since we believed that the scenes where those appeared songs, they would give us the feeling of being a quiet scene, and then the surprise of the monster passes, and quickly changes the song, so that we would be alert.
The sets, the close-ups with a basic palette without excess light helped them to recreate the essence of B movies, without the use of a great focus on the protagonist himself, the colors of the place alternated with the corresponding scene, but I don't know they exceeded his palette, brown, black, blue and some reddish tones predominated in the film, and it's quite good, you don't need all the colors in the world to create a film, sometimes less is much more. Not to mention the camera transitions, no 400 pointless camera cuts, just the cuts needed to make sense of the scene.
Despite its little publicity, Johannes Roberts managed to get his fans to get good memories of a movie that if it is aimed at the video game, basically gave it an introductory reboot for people who do not play the games, I tell you how both scenarios of the games without the need to be a copy and paste, and also with just the right touch of freedom to say that it is Resident Evil.
Despite the hate it received at one point, now people seem to reflect and realize that not everything has to be as it is in the film, and sometimes with few things they can achieve great challenges.
